Abbotsford Police Chief Bob Rich has recommended West Vancouver Police Cst. Griffin Gillan be suspended for 120 hours, be reduced in rank, and be required to take alcohol counselling.
Gillan pleaded guilty to the drunken beating of newspaper delivery driver Firoz Khan in January, 2009.
Gillan has been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the criminal and disciplinary investigations.
Chief Rich says disciplinary hearings determined Gillan's assault on Khan was fuelled by extreme intoxication, but Khan didn't receive any visible cuts or injuries.
The proceeding also determined Cst. Gillan didn't make any racist remarks during the assault, while conceding Gillan had little to no memory of the attack.
Gillan received a 21 day conditional sentence after pleading guilty to an assault charge.
Final approval of the recommendations rests in the hands of the Office of the Police Complaints Commissioner.
