A 24-year-old man was rushed to hospital Saturday afternoon after a rough time in the Coquitlam River that ended with a dramatic rescue.

The ordeal began around 12:30 when the man jumped off the Patricia Ave. pedestrian bridge.

One of two witnesses jumped in to try to save the man, but it was too difficult.

Police and fire crews waited for him in shallow water down stream.

"Our officer took off his duty belt, handed it to another officer and waded into the water -- approximately waist-deep water -- was able to grab onto the male and bring him back to the shore," said Coquitlam RCMP Sergeant Alec Borden.

The man suffered some bumps and bruises and possible hypothermia.
