Mounties on the defensive
METRO VANCOUVER/CKNW(AM980)

Mounties are defending the way they've handled a massive debit card scam in Metro Vancouver.

Sergeant Peter Thiessen insists even though thousands of people have had money stolen from their chequing accounts, he can't reveal if any banks have been targeted, "I would like nothing more than to be able to go to the media and provide information as to what businesses have been impacted and what banks are affected. But really that's not appropriate, you know and I disagree with it. But the reality is it's the bank's information to provide as they see fit to their customers, to their consumer."

Thiessen points out debit and credit card fraud rises every year across the country -- so it's not just a B.C. problem.

He says police agencies around Metro Vancouver are working with the RCMP to catch those responsible for the latest spate of thefts.
