Police Budget Update
Vancouver/CKNW(AM980)

11/18/2009

The Vancouver Police Board has unanimously approved a budget that does not include 35 new officers promised by a past City Council.

46 of 98 positions had already been filled but the VPD, facing a budget crunch - will not fill the remaining positions until at least 2012.

Chief Jim Chu says it's not going to affect Olympic security.

Chu says, "A lot of that attrition will occur after the Olympics so we'll actually have a lot of these officers on the streets during the Olympics. We've also made provisions with the Integrated Security Unit for some overtime shifts so there will actually be extra patrols."

21 civilian positions will also not be filled.

The move saves 2.6-million this fiscal year and 4.1-million overall.
