The Province Operation Phoenix Headlines
 
 
Up to 14 people will be given a chance at a new life, thanks to a unique partnership between The Province, the Downtown Community Court and three local schools.
We asked readers and people who participated what they thought of the Operation Phoenix series. Here's some of what they said.
C y Hisao Saimoto could be considered a heritage fixture of the Downtown Eastside. The 81-year-old has been volunteering on behalf of the Japanese community -- notably with the Japanese Language School and Japanese Hall and Vancouver Buddhist Temple -- ever since he returned to Vancouver after living in internment camps in the 1940s.
Anyone with two or more convictions for drug possession, plus two or more convictions for theft, must upon a third conviction in B.C. for either choose a jail sentence or a long-term drug-treatment program.
A performance audit of federally funded Downtown Eastside agencies and service providers be conducted by Auditor General of Canada Sheila Fraser, complemented by a value-for-money operational audit measuring the effectiveness of provincially funded Downtown Eastside services conducted by Auditor General of B.C. John Doyle.
In its final week, Operation Phoenix makes six recommendations for the Downtown Eastside.
Put an end to wait-lists by creating more detox and long-term treatment beds that are licensed, regulated and inspected. Locate facilities outside the Downtown Eastside so addicts have a chance of success in staying clean.
