The City of Winnipeg on Friday raised flags at Portage and Main, in honour of the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth.
The flag-raising coincides with the Central Weekend to celebrate The Jubilee, which takes place from Saturday to Tuesday June 5, 2012 in London, England, in conjunction with celebratory activities throughout the United Kingdom and across the Commonwealth.
In London, England, there will be a concert at Buckingham Palace, and a network of 2,012 beacons will be lit by communities and individuals throughout the United Kingdom, as well as the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man and the Commonwealth.
In Winnipeg, a Diamond Jubilee Candlelight Service of Remembrance will be held by the three levels of government Sunday, June 3 at 8:30 p.m., at Brookside Cemetery, 3001 Notre Dame Avenue. The service will honour all those who have served in Canada's military. A highlight of the Winnipeg service will be the placing of candles by cadets on each of the more than 11,000 military monuments found in Brookside Cemetery, the largest and oldest military field of honour in Canada.
