31 members of the Manitoba Association of Health Care Professionals (MAHCP), employed by the Society for Manitobans with Disabilities (SMD), have voted in favour of strike action, to back up their demands for a new agreement. The negotiations committee has set a deadline of 8:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 16, 2012 to reach a settlement to the members’ issues.
The MAHCP members are occupational therapists, physiotherapists and speech language pathologists at SMD.. They provide therapy services to pre-school aged children with disabilities throughout the Province. They have been working without a contract for more than two (2) years. Recruitment and retention of professional staffs has been identified as a problem by both SMD and the Health Care Professionals..
The Association and the members fear unless improvements can be made to the employment contract, retaining existing staff and recruiting qualified and experienced staffs to vacancies will become more acute. Negotiations, with a Provincially appointed conciliator, continue this Friday.
