Firefighters fighting fire on Highway Five
Hamilton firefighters are battling a fire at the Maple Leaf Rothsay rendering plant.   The plant is near Greensville, on Highway 5, just west of Brock Road. Everyone has been evacuated from the building. Callers to CHML News say that vats of fat are burning.  Part of Highway 5 is closed.   Some houses are being evacuated.

Sanford Ave Siemens plant closing in 2011
More devastating news within the local manufacturing sector. Siemens confirms that it is closing its plant on Sanford Avenue in Hamilton, as of July 2011. Approximately 550 employees are affected. The employees were informed during a meeting at 10 o'clock this morning that production is being moved to Charlotte, North Carolina. Plant Manager Brian Maragno says it was a "strategic decision" by Siemens, in order to be closer to its customer base. The Hamilton plant produces 60 hertz gas turbines.

Hamilton Health Sciences Opens New Research Centre
Local health researchers have Canada's #1 killer in their sights. Hamilton Health Sciences celebrated the official opening of the new David Braley Cardiac, Vascular and Stroke Research Institute on Thursday morning. It's a facility which boasts 200 thousand square feet of research spaces, labs, meeting rooms and offices.  It's all centralized within a six-storey building behind Hamilton General Hospital. Dr. Jeffrey Weitz says they are working to understand the root causes of heart attack and stroke. Dr. Weitz heads up one of two world-renowned research teams that is housed in the institute.

Ticats Introduce 2010 Coaching Staff
The Ticats have introduced their 2010 coaching staff today. Newcomers include offensive line coach Steve Burrato and receivers coach Tim Kearse. Buratto brings almost three decades worth of CFL experience to the Ticats staff.   He has previously worked extensively as an Offensive Coordinator with the Argos in 2007-08, Calgary Stampeders 2005-06, B.C. Lions 2003-04, Baltimore Stallions 1994-95 and served as the Argos Special Teams Coordinator and Running Backs Coach in 2009. Buratto has been a part of two Grey Cup championship teams including one as Head Coach of the Lions in 2000. Kearse previously served as Receivers Coach for the Saskatchewan Roughriders from 2001-06 and Montreal Alouettes in 2007.   As a player, Kearse spent time with the Saskatchewan Roughriders from 1983-84 and 1988 as well as the NFL’s Detroit Lions in 1986 and Indianapolis Colts in 1987 They'll join holdovers Mike Gibson as offensive coordinators and quarterbacks coach Khari Jones. On the defensive side, Greg Marshall returns as coordinator, John Kropke is back coaching the defensive line and Brad Miller will coach the defensive backs. Dave Easley will be back as special teams coordinator.

Student Struck By Van On Main Street
A Westdale student has been struck by a vehicle. The youngster was taken to hospital by ambulance on Thursday afternoon, after being clipped by a van while trying to race across five lanes of traffic on Main Street. The student appears to have suffered a leg injury. It's the latest incident to highlight safety concerns at the location.  Students routinely attempt to cross the street between Westdale and an HSR stop, rather than using the nearby crosswalk at Main and Longwood.

Teen struck at Barton & James
A pedestrian has been struck by a vehicle just north of the downtown core. It happened around 1 o'clock this afternoon at the corner of Barton and James. Police say a 14 year old girl was struck as a vehicle was turning from Barton onto James. Her injuries are not life threatening. Police are investigating.

Two Marauders ready for CFL e-camp.
The CFL Evaluation Camp begins Friday and runs through the weekend. The E-Camp puts draft eligible Canadian prospects through a series of speed and strength tests as well as football drills. CFL scouts are touting this year's draft class as one of the strongest in years. Two members of the McMaster Marauders will be at the camp; offensive lineman Justin Glover and receiver Kevin D'Hollander. It kicks off Friday afternoon afternoon with player arrivals and team interviews and continues through Sunday afternoon at the Varsity Centre at the University of Toronto and the Park Hyatt Toronto Hotel.

Group eyeing alternative Pan Am stadium sites
There are reports a group of city businessmen is looking at plans for an alternative to the city's Pan Am stadium site at the west harbour. According to the Spectator, the group is looking at the Lafarge Canada slag site on Windermere Road, the former Studebaker property at Victoria and Burlington streets and a parcel of land near the QEW and Centennial Parkway. The Spectator isn't giving any names, but says the group is concerned about remedial costs for the west harbour land, limited parking and poor exposure.

Woman charged in assaults on seniors
The owner-operator of a residential care facility in Hamilton has been charged with the assault of two senior residents. Hamilton Police allege the two senior residents were assaulted at the facility in the city's east end in October 2009. Danica (Donna) Kozar, 47, of nearby Mount Hope was arrested on Wednesday. Kozar is charged with two counts of assault with a weapon. Police have not released the name of the facility.

Car slams into Hamilton home
Hamilton police are looking for the driver of a car that slammed into a home on the mountain early this morning. Police say the car hit a home on Rexford Drive near Upper Gage and the Linc. The woman inside the home wasn't hurt. She went out to check on the damage and found a man yelling "my friend, my friend." The woman went inside to call 9-1-1, but when she came back out, the man had disappeared. Police brought in the K9 unit but have not been able to locate the driver or any passengers. Their investigation is continuing.
