What was once a small home at the corner of Main and Cootes -- has become an institution.

That from the President of the Board of Directors of Ronald McDonald House Hamilton, David Millen.

The recently expanded facility is opening its doors to families -- increasing its accommodation from 15 to 40 bedrooms.

The project was made possible by contributions of 2.6 million dollars from the federal government and 4.3 million from the province, as well as land donated by the city.

Ronald McDonald House provides accommodation for families of critically ill children receiving life-saving treatments at nearby hospitals.

Millen says the previous, smaller facility used to turn away on on average five families per day.

The new place features additional amenities such as computers, laundry and a meal program.
