A Niagara regional police officer is facing an assault charge following an investigation by the province's civilian police watchdog. The Special Investigations Unit says a 31-year-old man was injured on May 19th during an ``interaction'' with police at the Kool Katts Caribbean Restaurant in Niagara Falls. Police were called for a noise complaint and the SIU says Michael Farkas, who was working as a photographer, took pictures of what was happening and followed police out of the building.
Farkas was later diagnosed with a broken nose, orbital bone and cheekbone --- and SIU director Ian Scott says there are reasonable grounds to believe Constable Paul Zarafonitis, an officer with the Niagara Region Police Service, committed a criminal offence.
