Local home builders benefited from the warmer weather last month.
There were 546 housing starts in the Hamilton CMA last month, compared to 219 in April 2011.
There have been nearly 13-hundred new home starts in the first four months of this year, up from just 513 at this time last year.
Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation says about half of all new home starts in April were semi-detached homes, townhouses, and apartments, and all of them occurred in Hamilton and Burlington.
CMHC says single-detached starts in Hamilton also doubled last month, because more land has become available for new home development in some of the city's rural neighbourhoods.
The Hamilton CMA is comprised of Burlington, Grimsby, Halton Hills, Milton and Oakville.
