Peter Goldring is not having the Canada Day he imagined.
The Member of Parliament for Edmonton Centre-East says that the booth he's set up on Canada Day at the Alberta Legislature for over ten years was disallowed this year.
According to Goldring his office received word from the sergeant at arms for the Alberta Legislature that his Edmonton Chapter of the Montreal based Special Committee for Canadian Unity would not be allowed to set up shop this year because his group is "too political".
"To challenge unconstitutional actions in the courts of Canada (and) to organize and encourage Canadians everywhere to spread the message and benefits of Canadian unity," reads Goldring from the back of his Unity Committee card.
"The unconstitutional acts were more geared towards the linguistic problems they had in Quebec," he clarifies.
Goldring says his group has not had any political ties since he established the local chapter 16 years ago.
"Yes I'm an MP, but I also went into politics to work for Canadian unity."
Goldring intends to take this matter up with Speaker Gene Zwozdesky. (ks)
