A new report shows Alberta better start collecting more oil royalties if it wants to ship our resource through a Northern Gateway pipeline.
The report from the Alberta Federation of Labour shows Alberta only collects 18 per cent in oil royalties, meaning when production ramps up with the proposed Enbridge line, millions more dollars will be leaving the province.
Nancy Furlong with the AFL says Alberta can't keep developing the oilsands, without pocketing some extra cash.
"If (the Northern Gateway Pipeline) goes ahead, or if we continue to develop the oilsands at the rate we're developing them, then we need to look at our royalty rates and the amounts of money we are leaving on the table."
Furlong says between 2012 and 2045, Alberta will only collect about $216 billion of a possible $1.2 trillion in oil revenue. (lk, kdr)
