The shocking headline grabbing attack on a Calgary woman in Mazatlan may be part of the reason for a call to double penalties on criminals who target tourists.
Calgarian Sheila Nabb was brutally beaten in a luxury resort in Mazatlan's "golden zone" in January. The attack generated sensational headlines across North America. A suspect charged with her attempted murder seems to have vanished in the Mexican legal system.
The governor of Sinaloa State where Mazatlan is located is sending to Congress a proposed law that seeks to double the penalties for those who commit crimes against tourists. The Mazatlan Sun reports governor Mario López Valdez told a meeting of tourism players he has discussed the proposal with fellow governors and it will signal an assurance that visitors to Mexico will enjoy a renewed experience that is, in his words "extraordinary and safe."
