The route for the proposed Western Transmission Line is coming under scrutiny from the Alberta Utilities Comission.

A hearing will examine the 350-km Edmonton-to-Calgary line over the next several weeks.

Altalink's Scott Schreiner says the provincial electrical grid is several decades out-of-date. He says an extra-governmental source determined the need for the new line.

"The Alberta Electric System Operators are an independent not-for-profit planner, and they identify what is required for the province," Schreiner explains. "So they, every two years, publish an updated plan as to what they believe is required in Alberta. The Western Transmission Line is a part of that plan."

Schreiner says in the past 30 years,  the demand for energy in our province has doubled. (scb, lk)
