City council has passed a bylaw stopping vehicles from idling in designated zones outside schools and hospitals, starting January 1, 2013.
The bylaw applies when the temperature is over zero degrees Celsius but school busses and ambulances are exempt from the bylaw.
Council voted 7-4 in favour of the bylaw. Councillor Kerry Diotte is opposed to it, saying the bylaw isn't necessary.
"I talked to administration at the meeting and said 'can't hospital and schools, don't they have the right, to ban idling on their own property?' and they said yes. So why are we getting into passing a civic bylaw that can be handled by the people at schools and hospitals with simple signage?," says Diotte.
Mayor Mandel, and councillors Tony Caterina and Ed Gibbons also voted against it. (lk, ks)
