Historically, rafting down the Bow and Elbow Rivers have been a popular pastime for Calgarians. However, this season's erratic weather and frequent river flow advisories have made the rivers riskier for boaters. Matthew Farkas, Manager at Lazy Day Raft Rentals says the efforts of the City, Fire Crews and Police to increase safety have made things a lot better, but the unpredictable weekend weather for most of the summer, combined with frequent river advisories have really bit into business. By the looks of the traffic he is seeing this weekend, he is optimistic that the summer's profits can be salvaged.
Anyone thinking of rafting over the weekend should be aware that the Calgary Police Service is on the water and they are checking to make sure everyone is wearing their life-jackets as well as handing out fines for having alcohol on the water.
