Police Stepping Up Enforcement for Canada Day Long Weekend

RCMP and Sheriffs will be out in full force this weekend on the province's highways.

Besides the usual check for speeders, police will also have another weapon in their efforts to keep highways safe, new penalties for driving over .08 and .05 which come into effect July 1st.

At a traffic checkstop near Balzac, Justice Minister Jonathan Denis says the province doesn't want to stop anyone's fun on the long weekend but they want to ensure that highways are safe and people get home safely.

Tougher rules on drinking and driving come into effect Sunday and Denis isn't apologizing after taking a police drinking test.

"From my own experience that at .08 you feel hammered and I don't think anyone has any business operating any vehicle above .08"

Denis says while there will be special attention on the notorious Highway 63, all areas of the province will see stepped up enforcement
