The Alberta Medical Association may be stepping up political action even as negotiations on a new fee deal for doctors draw to a successful close. A cordial exchange of letters between the AMA President and Health Minister Fred Horne suggests despite a few outstanding issues, the fee deal should be ready for ratification by the end of this month. Fees are one thing near and dear to doctors' hearts but the AMA says the state of health care will need more than a band aid solution. A new PR campaign hinting at political pressure includes the message: "96-percent of Albertans say it's important doctors advocate on behalf of patients." The ads are headlined "A hug from mom and a bandage is often perfect for a bruise or a minor scrape...but it is not so simple when it comes to changes and improvements in the health care system."
