Gender reassignment surgery will be funded again by Alberta government

It appears the province has quietly agreed to restore funding for gender reassignment surgery.

A letter from Health Minister Fred Horne says "Effective June 15, the Final Stage Gender Reassignment Surgery Program...is being established to provide funding for Alberta residents diagnosed with Gender Identity Disorder and who meet the established program elegibility criteria."

Gender reassignment surgery funding was mostly withdrawn in 2009 to save the province 700-thousand dollars a year. The operation costs about $18,000 to transition from male to female and about $60,000 for females to males.
