Olympic Heartache

Posted 3/6/2010 10:59:00 AM
I’ve heard locals refer to this time after the Olympics as a depression or even a hangover. For me, I find it more familiar to a different despondent state. The shocking disbelief and emptiness I feel inside can only be described as a bitter break up. The Olympics have come and gone, only to leave me with the hope that there are still plenty of fish in the sea.

For a sports fan, she was the perfect 10 that you chase your entire life, knowing you’ll never be together. You catch her eyes every couple of years but just from a distance while she’s with someone else. Then, one spring break, things just come together as the stars align. The one you’ve had your eyes on for years gives you the time of day. You realize that this is just a fling, and that it’ll never last forever, but can ...

Canadians need more Gold!

Last night’s gold medal in Ice Dance distracted Canadians just long enough before focusing back on the task at hand, which is the quest for gold in Men’s hockey. Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir’s performance was actually captivating.

Ordinarily ice dancing, regarded by some as the race walking of the Winter Olympics, wouldn’t be on my radar. This time, I found myself drawn to the event. Like most forms of figure skating, this is an event that the Russians hold close to their hearts. There has never been a North American to win gold in the competition, and only two others outside of Russia have come first at the Olympics since the competition began in 1976. So when the Russian pair of Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin was forced to take the bronze I couldn’t help make the comparison to the feeling Canadians would have if men’s hockey team would ...

It's Go Time

For the last seven years, Vancouver has been regarded as 'that' city, and in a couple of weeks it will be, just another city. So for those who choose not to be captivated by the excitement around town, I'm just sorry. The world is here to have a good time and I'm going to try my hardest to join in.

For the next few weeks I'll make a concentrated effort to fill you in on just what's going on around the city. I'm lucky enough to be right in the middle of it, and I've already witnessed the warmth of the world.

The other night I decided to check out one of the coolest (pun inteded) spots in the city. A good friend mentioned that his bar will have an 'ice lounge'. He described it as a bar made of ice. I needed to see this to believe it. To my surprise he was right. ...

O.G. : Original Greenguys

Posted 2/1/2010 4:59:00 PM
It was just over a month ago when we were reintroduced to the Green Men in Vancouver. The first time I remember seeing two green men in spandex at GM Place was actually during the playoffs last season, once in the St. Louis series and once in the Chicago series. Their seats weren’t as noticeable as the current penalty box guys, but they still managed to spark an energetic playoff crowd, adding to an already electric atmosphere.

I actually remembered both games from last year so I thought I’d try to find their story. The first thing they told me was that they took the idea from the show “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”. The phenomenon took off as green men were seen at sporting events from coast to coast. Green men have even been spotted at the Buick Open behind Tiger Woods. Woods originally denied the allegations but later admitted ...

Road Trip!

The Vancouver Canucks capped off another strong home stand with a 3-2 win over the Blues, extending their win streak to 6 games. They’re playing their best hockey at just the right time. The Sedins and Burrows are being regarded as one of the best lines in the game while Roberto Luongo is coming up big, making key saves at key moments. Not to mention the defence that’s stepping up despite a recent run of injuries. And believe it or not they’re even getting secondary scoring. This unprecedented 14 game road trip couldn’t come at a better time.

Yes, it would be nice if the Canucks could play 82 games at home and we could enjoy the boys in blue roll through playoffs hosting every game at GM Place. The reality of the matter is that they’ll have to find a way to win on the road if they want ...
