Oh Captain, Caps Captain

The start of the MLS season for the Vancouver Whitecaps draws closer, and after the final tune up last Saturday we have a better understanding of what the team will look like for the opener against Toronto. Newly acquired Eric Hassli looks the part: A tall strong commanding striker who is a handful for most defenders in this league.
One player that we didn’t get to see at all was centre back and captain Jay DeMerit. The veteran has played at a very high level throughout his career and is excited for the opportunity here in Vancouver. After last weekend’s match, I spent a few minutes with the captain to get his thoughts on the upcoming season.
Top Ten Time

It’s just 10 days from the opening kickoff for the Vancouver Whitecaps. The start of a very exciting season for soccer fans in the city with so much anticipation led me to the wonderful world of ‘top tens’.
Who are the top ten Whitecaps/86ers of all time? What are the top ten moments in club history? Instead I decided on attempting to name the top ten most important players for the upcoming season. I’ll take into consideration each person’s role, among other criteria (age, background, skill, position). Creating a list based on skill alone would just be too difficult.
10. Teitur Thordarson: So maybe I cheated a bit here, but I think he needs to be mentioned. The coach is loved by the locals but it’s a whole new season and definitely a step up. His discipline in defense and aggressiveness on offense has worked so far, ...
Vancouvers Big Three

The Vancouver Whitecaps may have found a short term answer; A big strong commanding presence on the front line that can hopefully fill the net.
Eric Hassli is the latest addition to come from the Caps’ pipeline, the Swiss League. He joins former teammate from FC Zurich Alain Rochat and Lucerne FC playmaker Davide Chiumiento.
If the trio can provide the type of chemistry upper management is hopeful of, it shouldn’t take long before drawing comparisons to the Swedish hockey players in this city. Okay, I may be getting ahead of myself and I understand that none of them are even close to related (not even from the same country), but I do think there is reason to be excited. The three do have one thing in common; they are extremely skillful and have the ability to entertain an audience.
When Chiumiento came last summer, I was excited to ...
Whitecaps Camp

This is the soft re-launch of my blog which will now be dedicated to the Vancouver Whitecaps. After the first few days of training camp, there is still a lot of uncertainty, but plenty of optimism.
There were, and still are, questions about who might be the starting striker for the opener against TFC. It’s still early enough, so I’m not too concerned… yet. The players and coaches seemed less concerned as well. Caps coach Teitur Thordarson seems more excited to get into game action and see his players execute.
After watching a few training sessions I did notice some potential at the forward position. One disappointment would be the initial impression of Atiba Harris. The lone striker with any real MLS experience has struggled to find his stride early at camp. Admittedly Harris feels he has a little catching up to do in regards to getting match ...
Looking Back and Forth

Now that I’ve had a week to reflect on the BC Lions inspired performance against the Saskatchewan Roughriders last Sunday, I can say that the year had it’s ‘ups and downs’. Cliché as it may seem, it’s the truth. We can’t forget that this team had high expectations before starting 1-7. That poor start inevitably led to the Lions loss since they failed to host a playoff game, as they expected. I have to believe it would have been a different outcome at Empire Field.
But there is no reason to cry over spilt eggnog (unless it contains rum, then cry away). This team circled the wagons and found a way to finish the season strong and actually make the playoffs. They continued to believe when some fans (ehem… yes, you!) found other distractions during the fall portion of the season. Travis Lulay proved that he can be a ...
