Amid growing tensions between the Vancouver Police Department and the Independent Investigations office, the IIO’s Chief of Investigations is leaving his role.
Spokesperson Marten Youssef says the IIO won’t reveal why John Larkin is leaving June 9, but does say his departure has nothing to do with the deteriorating relations with Vancouver police.
“No, absolutely not. Those are two separate instances, they’re two very separate things. And they should not be included together.”
As to what the reason actually is, Youssef stayed tight-lipped.
“I think for every individual there are separate and unique circumstances, and I think it would be inappropriate to speculate in terms of why that is.”
Youssef wouldn’t even reveal if the departure was contractual, or when the decision was finalized.
“In this case, all we are saying is that he is concluding his career. Exactly when [that decision was made,] I’m not going to be able to comment on that.”
Youssef says Larkin’s immediate replacement is Deputy Gail Hogan until a permanent replacement is found.
