Crews are searching for a 76-year-old-man after a mudslide in Tappen, B.C. — near Salmon Arm.
Salmon Arm RCMP say the slide happened overnight into Saturday morning in the 5900-block of Sunnybrae Canoe Point Rd. and completely enveloped one home.
It’s possible other homes in the area may have been impacted as well.
Cpl. Dan Moskaluk says the missing man was last seen inside the home destroyed by the slide.
“[We want ] to safely access and possibly make entry into the home to search for the man but we’ve been unable to do that at this point due to safety issues for searchers.”
Resources have been activated from the Shuswap Search and Rescue Team, Tappen and Salmon Arm Fire Departments.
Vancouver Fire and Rescue says their Heavy Urban Search and Rescue team was also deployed this afternoon carrying six members and a K-9 unit.
A chopper has also been brought in to conduct a geotechnical assessment of the site to ensure it is safe enough for searchers to move in and look for the man.
An evacuation order was issued for 13 properties, according to the Columbia Shuswap Regional District.
The slide has blocked road access to approximately 100 homes.
