Homicide investigators are looking into an altercation at a UBC residential care facility that left an 81-year-old dead.
The incident happened April 26 at the Purdy Pavilion, a Vancouver Coastal Health facility that handles seniors with cognitive impairment.
Cpl. Meghan Foster with the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team says police have taken over to ensure “nothing has been overlooked.”
“We are investigating an altercation that occurred at the Purdy Pavilion, where two males were involved. One male ended up succumbing to his injuries, or rather, passing away.”
Police say the death happened the day after the altercation.
Coastal Health spokesperson Anna Marie D’Angelo says internal probes are also underway.
“We are conducting two reviews of this tragic incident, one by Residential Care program and other by the licensee. And we offer our sincere condolences to the family of the resident who passed away.”
The Purdy Pavilion website describes it as a part of the UBC hospital complex with facilities for 200 extended care residents.
