In recent months Maple Ridge Mayor Nicole Read has been the target of online harassment and now the RCMP are investigating.
A statement from the city says personal threats have been made to Read’s safety.
City Councillor Craig Speirs says it stems from the mayor’s stance on homelessness, advocating for shelters and supportive housing.
“She’s been very stand-up about that and she’s defending those who can’t themselves.”
Speirs says Council only found out about it last week, but adds he knew things haven’t been right for a while.
“Just a meeting we were at and she had police people with her as an escort. You know something is going on when that happens. You don’t do that for no reason.”
The city says its hopeful Reed can return to her duties soon.
“The amount of absolute hate that has been built towards her…If she was a guy, I don’t think she would have got this kind of harassment.”
So far no comment from RCMP if charges have been laid.
