The daughter of the first Black speaker of B.C.’s legislature is speaking out as Green Vancouver Island candidate Mark Neufeld faces backlash for imitating Martin Luther King Jr. during a speech on Wednesday.
Former NDP Federal Candidate Constance Barnes says the community is disgusted by Mark Neufeld’s speech.
“I actually was cringing when I heard him mocking Martin Luther King. It was horrifying for me, person of color.”
She says one person called her crying, while others wonder what can be done.
“One person called and said this is almost as bad as black face.”
“I’m working with a lot of Black African – Canadian People. I’ve had calls from people that have been in tears, calls from people asking what they can do. If you look on Facebook, there’s a lot of people of color weighing in.”

Asked how the Greens could make it right?
“You actually reach out and ask people that are offended, ‘what is it that I need to do?'”
Barnes says Neufeld’s apology isn’t good enough and Green Leader Andrew Weaver should have taken a stronger stance instead of sweeping it under the carpet.
“I’m kind of getting people to take a deep breath and figure out if we want to do something as a group of strong black African-Canadian people.”
Barnes says a bigger concern is no one during Neufeld’s speech put a stop to it.
