A convicted killer who went missing from a minimum-security prison in Mission has now been recaptured.
He was apprehended by Agassiz RCMP as of 11:15 a.m. Saturday.
The Correctional Service of Canada says 53-years-old Robert Dezwaan was missing since 3:45 p.m. Friday; it was discovered during a count in the minimum security unit.
Dezwaan pleaded guilty to the second-degree murder of Cherish Oppenheim in 2003.
The girl’s body was found in a shallow grave just outside of Merritt in 2001.
When he attacked her, he was out on bail for attacking another girl in Kelowna.
He’s the third convicted killer to escape the institution since 2014.
CSC is now conducting an investigation into the incident, including how Dezwaan escaped.
