While Ottawa has tabled bills to legalize recreational marijuana by 2018, what does it mean for Canadians looking to eventually cross the border with pot into Washington – where it’s already legal?
U.S. Customs and Border Spokesperson Jason Givens says, don’t count on bringing your stash across the border into the U.S.
“We basically have a zero tolerance policy.”
“Although medical and recreational marijuana is legal in Washington and several other states. To sell, possess, and production of marijuana, they all remain illegal under U.S. federal laws. Crossing the border with marijuana will still be illegal, it’s prohibited.”
“If you’re caught with a small personal use quantity, you can be fined up to 500 dollars, if it’s a larger quantity you can be charged with marijuana smuggling.”
Givens says in severe cases you could even face jail time.
