Three workers from a Chilliwack dairy farm have pleaded guilty nearly three years after a shocking video surfaced showing employees from ‘Chilliwack Cattle Sales’ abusing animals.
Travis Keefer, Chris Vandyke and Jamie Visser have all pleaded guilty to several charges of animal cruelty.
‘Mercy for Animals’ Vice President Krista Hiddema:
“For Mr. Keefer and Mr. Viser, Crown is asking for four months in jail and a three-year probation on owning animals. For Mr. Vandyke crown is asking for six months in jail and a five-year ban in owning animals.”
“We certainly believe that it is not enough necessarily, but this sends a very strong message to the factory farming community, that this type of animal abuse will not be tolerated by Canadians.”
A judge is expected to hand down a sentence next month.
Hiddema says four other workers are set to stand trial, also next month.
‘Mercy for Animals’ discovered the abuse through an undercover investigation in 2014.
A video showed workers kicking, punching, and beating cows.
In December of 2016, Chilliwack Cattle Sales and one of its directors pleaded guilty, and were fined more than $300,000, and handed animal bans.
The BCSPCA has not yet commented.
