A semi truck hauling nearly 50,000 litres of diesel has crashed into a ditch in the East Kootenays.
The incident was reported just after noon on Friday about 10 km south of Elkford in the Rocky Mountain foothills.
Initial estimates had raised fears as much as 70 per cent of the load had spilled, but the Ministry of Environment has since revised that figure down to about 6,000 litres.
The ministry says heavy snowpack appears to have contained the spilled fuel in the ditch, and that no waterways are believed to be affected.
Specialized equipment is now enroute to pump out the fuel in the ditch and remaining in the truck.
