It’s official: Shovels are hitting the ground on the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project.
A ceremony is set to take place on Wednesday besides Delta Fire Hall Number 4.
B.C. Transportation Minister Todd Stone will be joined by Delta Mayor Lois Jackson to ring in the project.
North Delta MLA Scott Hamilton will also take part in the ceremony.
He says while tomorrow’s event makes it official, work has already started.
“It’s been underway for a couple months now, a certain amount of preloading taking place, soil compaction, that sort of thing.”
Hamilton says preparation has been ongoing for some time.
“BC Hydro is relocating some Hydro lines across the Fraser River and use the George Massey Tunnel as a conduit so to speak.”
The project has been met with backlash over environmental concerns and worries of increasing suburban sprawl.
The 10 lane replacement is pegged at $3.5-billion and is expected to be completed by 2022.
