Yesterday the Surrey RCMP reported handing out 350 distracted driving tickets in the month March, and today Coquitlam Mounties say they handed out 70 for the same reason.
The numbers come after a coordinated crackdown with ICBC and the Metro Vancouver Transit Police as a part of distracted driving month.
Coquitlam Mounties say together with seatbelt violations, distracted driving penalties made up a nearly a third of all tickets handed out in March.
The top three reasons for being busted with a device behind the wheel?
- I had to take an emergency phone call about my company’s payroll
- I had my phone on speaker mode so that’s technically hands-free
- I had to check the time
Mounties say while they might seem important at the moment, none of these excuses will get you out of a ticket.
In B.C., distracted drivers can expect a penalty of $543 for a first offence, scaling up to $14,000 for multiple repeat offenders.
