Surrey RCMP’s latest distracted driving enforcement blitz is showing the issue is still a big problem in the Lower Mainland.
Surrey RCMP took part in the province-wide distracted driving crackdown, and in the city alone issued 350 violation tickets, a slight uptick from the 324 they conducted last year.
“I think it’s safe to say there are a significant number of people that still aren’t getting the message that distracted driving is not acceptable in this day and age,” says Corporal Scotty Schumann with Surrey RCMP.
He notes it’s alarming, especially given that distracted driving fines jumped to a total of $543 last year, double from the previous penalty.
Schumann says distracted driving continues to be the driving force behind the majority of fatal accidents and is never acceptable.
