More racism in the Lower Mainland, this time at an Abbotsford school.
The Sumas Mountain campus of the Abbotsford School of Integrated Arts was spray painted with swastikas, along with a number of offensive slogans.
“It’s a real cross-section, mixed messages if I can say that, including ‘white power’, there’s swastikas, there was a reference to men’s rights, and then strangely enough, there was ‘Grad 2017’ and ‘we’re back,'” says Abbotsford Police Constable Ian MacDonald.
He adds it’s been several years since something this extensive was found.
“We’ll see graffiti from time to time, generally it’s not in this quantity and certainly it’s always a concern when it’s on one of our schools. In my memory, it’s actually been years since we had an incident that would be close to this, embodying some of the same messaging.”
Abbotsford has not been immune to racism in recent months.
In January, KKK flyers were distributed to homes to coincide with Martin Luther King Junior Day.
And last November, a man was charged after being captured on video in a racist tirade against a South Asian man.
MacDonald says a police investigation is ongoing.
