The Vancouver Park Board is looking into ways to keep some community centres running in low-income communities.
Vision Commissioner Catherine Evans says some recreational centres aren’t even able to raise money for half of their expenses.
“Strathcona has an operating budget of about $1.6 to $1.7 million, and they have to raise over $1 million of that through fundraising activities including grants and sponsorship and donations.”
She’s put forward a motion which could move profits from other centres to offset costs at other locations that can’t stay in the black.
“That doesn’t solve their whole problem because the amount that we’re trying to raise through the new joint-operating agreement draft isn’t enough.”
Evans and NPA Commissioner Casey Crawford have both put forward motions to address community centre bottom lines for Monday’s meeting.
