Patrons of sports bars might have to chip in a few extra dimes for their beers to see the NHL playoffs this spring.
Bell and Rogers are increasing the rates for pubs and restaurants that purchase cable subscriptions for Sportsnet and TSN.
Owner of Phat Sports Lounge Al Price tells Global News he hopes nothing will change for his regulars.
“Hopefully we don’t see things like cover charges at bars to watch a Canucks game. I don’t know if that’s where it’s going or beer prices going up. It might be passed on to the consumer. We’ll see. We’re not going to do that here.”
The B.C. Restaurant and Food Services Association believes the average restaurant will need to serve around 30 extra customers per month to cover the added expense.
“It’s death by a thousand cuts. They get $120 here and $50 bucks there and it just keeps going on and on,” says President Ian Tostenson.
The increase will start on May 1, right in the middle of the NHL and NBA playoffs.
