Surrey RCMP is asking business owners to be wary of a thief posing as a municipal employee.
Investigators say on March 19 they were alerted to three separate businesses claiming that a man who identified himself as “Kevin” asked to check water pressure within their business.
Multiple businesses then reportedly found the man rummaging through employees’ belongings in their staff rooms.
When confronted, the man claimed to be “searching for leaks.”
A similar incident was reported to Langley RCMP earlier in the evening.
The man is described as 5’5″, tall, with darker skin, and he may have been driving a blue Honda Civic.
Corporal Scotty Schumann of Surrey RCMP warns businesses to verify every person claiming to be a municipal employee.
“City of Surrey employees all carry photo identification. A municipal employee does not conduct checks at private businesses and it is not their practice to show up without an appointment unannounced at a business. If you have concerns about suspicious activity, call police and take steps to verify their employment by calling the appropriate City department.”
Surrey RCMP is asking that anyone with information on the thief contact them at 604-599-0502, Langley RCMP at 604-532-3200 or Crime Stoppers.
