The provincial office in charge of punishing those who profit from crime is suing a Coquitlam car rental company whose vehicle they say was used for drug trafficking.
The Director of Civil Forfeiture wants Prestige Car Rentals to hand over the proceeds of any crimes committed with a 2013 Nissan Altima handed over.
Prestige Car Rentals works through a company called VanCity Motors, which has changed its name to VanCity Car Rentals, Prestige Car Rentals and Best Price Car Rentals.
In December 2016, Campbell River RCMP busted two people in the car with hard drugs.
VanCity Motors’ Artan Tocaj says neither of them are clients of his, but suggests a woman may have rented the Altima and given one of them access to it.
“And maybe she give the car to another person and that’s where the crime starts. We have no idea. The vehicle was in a crime without our consent or knowledge.”
The Director claims the company has rented out cars which have been used for criminal activities in the past and that those in charge of Prestige – Altin Alibeu and Tocaj – should’ve known what the vehicles were being used for.
According to The Vancouver Sun, the Director of Civil Forfeiture took VanCity Motors to court following a Surrey RCMP investigation into a drug dealing operation in 2014.
None of the claims has been proven in court.
