After being granted bail in Toronto, a pot activist says the government should be spending funds somewhere else.
Jodie Emery says police are allegedly spending millions of dollars on the investigation into her and her husband, while people are dying on the street during an opioid crisis.
According to Emery, the longer the government waits to legalize marijuana, more people will die.
“Even the U.S. Government reports that where you have more marijuana access, you have fewer opioid deaths. So I’m saying that the Liberal government in their campaign to restrict and limit access to marijuana, which is their stated goal, will result in more people dying from opioid and fentanyl.”

She says the politicians and police who are maintaining the prohibition are continuing to enforce the status quo.
“Which means if there is organized crime involved in marijuana, even though it’s actually a very small part, the only reason is because of their policy. When the government says criminals are involved with cannabis, it’s very easy to stop that. Stop criminalizing it.”
She and her husband, Marc Emery, were arrested in Toronto at Pearson International Airport on Wednesday and charged with several drug-related offences on Thursday.
