The annual 4/20 event appears to be headed towards Sunset Beach as an unsanctioned event for a second straight year.
After a lengthy debate Monday night, a motion put forward by Vancouver Park Board commissioner John Coupar to not permit or approve future 4/20 events passed.
It means the event is not getting a permit, and future smoking events won’t, either.
Coupar said it sends a clear signal to the event organizers.
“They will not take direction from anybody. It’s like ‘it’s going there, whether you guys like it or not’, and we’re supposed to just acquiesce to that, and say ‘yeah, sure, that’s okay, do whatever you want’. I don’t think so.”
A staff report before the acknowledged that the event will take place at Sunset Beach with or without a permit.
The report also suggested that a permit would’ve reduced the liability for the Park Board as well as provide greater control and compliance over the event.
