A Canadian security technology company has developed a system that detects concealed weapons using radar.
Patriot One Technologies CEO Martin Cronin says the system pulses a thousand times per second, and can determine what objects are being carried by people based on the reflection from the pulses – whether it’s a mobile phone, laptop, or a gun.
“You could integrate it with a locking door for example. So if you think about perhaps a public school setting, and a student is approaching the door with a concealed knife or a gun, you can simply have the door automatically lock ahead of them. So it’s a real-time determination.”
Cronin adds it’s not a perfect system, but it will help immensely.
“I would never say, ‘Oh, this is foolproof.’ You can’t claim that. But what I can say confidently is it is a huge leap forward in capability, and if deployed smartly in a whole variety of environments – it will save lives.”
He adds the technology can work with security cameras so it can be paired with images of suspects.
Cronin was a guest on CKNW’s Steele and Drex.
