BC Transplant and the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia are teaming up for a new organ donation program.
BC Transplant Operations Director Ed Ferre says they tested the program for about a year with four licensing offices.
“Last year we did 423 transplants and that was a record number and that was from 97 deceased donors.”
Farre says for about a year they tested with a pilot project.
He says there were four licensing centres participating, and now they’re expanding to all licensing offices across the province.
“When people renew their driver’s licenses, when they get the announcement in the mail, they have to go into the licensing centre for their new photograph and so on, so at that point they’re asked whether or not they would like to register on B.C.’s organ donor registry and they can do that right at the licensing centre.”
