If you live in Chilliwack, RCMP is warning you to be mindful of criminals who pose as utility employees.
Police say they’ve received complaints about two men going door-to-door on the 45000 block of Creekside Drive claiming to represent a company that inspects households with natural gas or electrical heating systems.
Better Business Bureau Spokesman Evan Kelly says a red flag is when they demand to come into your house.
“You know, sometimes they come in to look at your furnace and they start pointing out all these things that are wrong with it, you know, so take some of that with a grain of salt and if you want, if you do need servicing on your HVAC, by all means get more than one opinion.”
Kelly says you are in no obligation to let anyone into your home, and he adds that legitimate companies would communicate a warning to you.
“Say thank you very much, I’ll look into it myself and close the door. You know, if there in some sort of a rebate system going on, that the government is working on, then that should be readily available on any government website.”
Kelly adds, whatever you do, do not give out your personal information, especially your credit card number.
“You know, if they some literature or anything like that to leave with you, by all means, take that and read it over.”
Police say describe the suspects as a south Asian male, 5’8″ with a slim build and wearing a dark colored toque, pants and ski jacket.
The other is described as as a Caucasian male, 5’6″ with a slender build and short dark hair.
Both are carrying I.D. cards that read “SAFEGREEN” or “GREENSAFE” and also carrying a clipboard with pictures of furnaces.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
