In a disturbing new trend, Surrey RCMP say they’re seeing more replica guns in schools, even at the elementary level.
Surrey RCMP say they’ve seized more imitation guns this year than in previous years and in many cases, parents have bought them as toys for their child.
Corporal Scotty Schumann says some of these toys can be so realistic looking they are often mistaken for the real thing.
“The young people using these may not have malicious intent some may but most don’t but the problem is they look so realistic it can lead a person to believe they’re in danger or their community is.”
Schumann says just in the last year, they have responded to more than 100 calls involving imitation firearms.
He also says there’s been an uptick in youth circulating videos of themselves appearing to be armed when in fact they were holding an air gun.
