Coquitlam RCMP is searching for a man who evaded police after three crashes and a carjacking.
Police were called to a parking lot near Lougheed Highway and Westwood Street after reports of an impaired driver in the area.
RCMP spokesperson Corporal Michael McLaughlin says as soon as the suspect saw police, he sped off crashing into another vehicle on his way out of the parking lot.
But he says police didn’t chase him.
“There wasn’t enough of a potential charge for us to risk going after this driver. We have to make very sure that the public is safe and we only pursue under specific circumstances.”
Within moments, he got into another crash at the railroad tracks on Westwood and Kingsway Avenue.
That’s when Mounties say the suspect stole a car.
The driver of the stolen car got out of the vehicle with minor injuries, while the suspect drove into a pole, leaving the car defective.
McLaughlin says it is rare to see this happen in this community.
“You know there are files that come up from time to time that are pretty extraordinary. This is one of those. The fact that there were so many collisions and a carjacking in a short period is really extraordinary.”
RCMP are looking for a dark-skinned man in his thirties with short hair and tattoos up his neckline.
