A life-altering treatment for sufferers of Parkinson’s disease will now be covered by B.C.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Health, patients will be identified for PharmaCare coverage under the ministry’s Special Authority program.
Jean Blake from the Parkinson Society of British Columbia says DUODOPA will help patients with advanced stages of Parkinson’s.
“If you’re familiar with Michael J. Fox you may have seen when he’s on TV he has these involuntary movements, a kind of bobbing and weaving a bit, so they wouldn’t have that, it would just smooth it out.”
Blake says she’s happy to see treatment will be covered for some.
“It’s probably about ten to twelve people per year would qualify for this treatment, so it’s a very small number of people but it is very life-changing for those individuals.”
She says patients have been calling for better access to the treatment for years as it costs $60,000 a year.
