The Federal housing minister will be in town this week to meet with the region’s Mayors.
Metro Vancouver’s Mayors Council will be sitting down with Jean-Yves Duclos this Thursday, and Maple Ridge Mayor Nicole Read says top of the agenda will be homelessness issues.
She says they’ll share some of the specific challenges that have grown beyond the urban core.
“It’s a very serious situation in many of our suburbs, and really no area of Metro Vancouver is untouched by this issue. So we really do need to talk about rallying resources and bringing forth a regional approach to dealing with the issue. And obviously housing is a big part of that.”
Read, who helped spearhead the region’s homelessness task force, says they’re also hoping for an inside look at Ottawa’s yet to be completed National Housing Strategy.
“You know, we’re all waiting to really understand how significant that’s going to be and what it’s going to deliver. So we’re all interested in hearing what that’s going to look like and hopeful there’s going to be a significant amount of money in the federal budget.”
Read says they’ll also highlight the need for more resources, but says they won’t be pitching specific requests for the upcoming federal budget.
