More flyers are popping up, this time on downtown Vancouver’s Davie Street, targeting transgender people.
Morgane Oger, Trans advocate and BC NDP candidate for Vancouver False Creek, says a religious group from New Westminster is responsible for spreading the literature that says “Woman Means Something.”
“I saw one of these flyers myself, and I was appalled.”
She says Pastor Dirks is targeting Bill C-16, the proposed act to protect gender identity and gender expression.
“It’s trying to say that I’m a liar and that I’m not in fact a woman, and I find that really small minded. You know, this is the same propoganda that was used during civil rights, this is kind of the same propoganda that’s used agaist people of Islam, trying to create fear and loathing.”
She adds Dirks needs to inform himself better.
“Bill C-16 does not redefine what a woman is, does not do anything like that, it extends protection on the basis of gender identity and gender expression that is already extended for other emergent categories in this human rights act, such as religion.”
Oger says it’s important society stands together to help counter the pressures from groups promoting discrimination.
But joining the Steele and Drex show, Pastor Paul Dirks claims his initiative isn’t meant as an attack on Trans people.
Instead he says the movement to gender neutral spaces has created a situation of “gender versus sex” rights, which undermines women’s rights in “safe” spaces like shelters or showers.
“Our campaign certainly doesn’t say that transgendered people are the ones that are going to be perpetrating this violence, but rather that it creates unfortunate circumstances where others will be able to take advantage of these gender neutral spaces.”
