The British Columbia Civil Liberties Association announced that a group of volunteer Canadian lawyers and advocates are banding together to help ensure that travelers have the right information they need to cross the border, and to collect separate documentation to then be provided to American lawyers battling the U.S. travel ban.
This announcement comes after a judge in Washington State temporarily halted the implementation of parts of President Donald Trump’s travel ban.
Lawyer Jennifer O’Leary is one of 63 volunteers who answered a call from the U.S. Attorney’s Office to help travelers be cleared at the Vancouver International Airport.
She says with the poor dissemination around who is affected by the travel ban, you’re at risk of being turned away by not having the correct information.
O’Leary says the lawyers are working on two things; first to make sure travelers can be confident enough to assert their rights.
“And also to collect information on people being, who are being effected so that when the U.S. attorneys go to fight these bans in court, ’cause so far these are all temporary restraining orders, they have information on how many people have been affected.”
She says they are working on making people feel comfortable enough to share their stories.
O’Leary says she encourages anyone who has been affected by the ban in any way.
“The information is not being collected for use by the Canadian or U.S. government, and it’s not being used, and it won’t be shared widely, but it is a valuable way to help the efforts of American lawyers who want to fight this.”
She adds that she is anticipating this process will be litigated for a long time.
O’Leary says for updated immigration law information, to contact the Fragomen hotline at 617-903-8943.
She says anyone who wants to report the effects of the travel ban can e-mail email@example.com or fill out the online questionnaire, that goes directly to the American attorneys fighting the ban.
O’Leary adds, anyone who may need assistance traveling south of the border to one of the airports below can contact the corresponding legal team.
