Homelessness has not been a topic of conversation the last two years in Chilliwack.
City Councillor Ken Popove is sure the opioid crisis is coming to the city, and is advocating for a supervised injection site.
“It’s better to be proactive than reactive.”
He says it would be a step in the right direction, but they need Fraser Health to put money towards it.
“… There’s been no money in the past, so we’re just gonna keep on advocating for the services lacking in our area and try to get them here.”
Popove says Chilliwack seems to be left behind.
“I’m not sure where our pecking order is, but certainly other communities are getting more than what we’re getting, and it is frustrating, but we’re not gonna stop.”
He says there is the Integrated Case Management team that provides services for vulnerable people, but…
“With the ICM team you would also need either some sobering mats, or detox, that sort of thing… and the closest detox is in Surrey.”
He says council has not had a conversation about the issue yet.
